Push Payment Fraud, also known as Authorised Push Payment (APP) Fraud, occurs when fraudsters trick you into sending them money. They might impersonate legitimate businesses, family members, or even government agencies to convince you that the payment is urgent or necessary. Common examples include:
Purchase scams: Paying for items (e.g., tickets, goods) that never arrive.
Investment scams: Fraudsters promise high returns on fake investments.
Impersonation scams: Pretending to be your bank, tax authorities, or trusted organisations.
How to protect yourself
Always verify who you’re sending money to. Contact them through a verified number or email before making payments.
Be cautious of unsolicited requests. Fraudsters often create a sense of urgency to manipulate you.
Trust your instincts. If something seems off, take a moment to pause and confirm.
